Learn how to mount slides quickly and evenly using the BRAUN PAXIMAT Automount. This guide covers loading, transport, and common mistakes to avoid for perfect slide framing.

Quick Answer

Use the BRAUN PAXIMAT Automount to mount slides by inserting the film strip into the guide slots and letting the spring-loaded friction roller transport each frame automatically into your PAXIMOUNT CS or C.A.M.-system frame.

Why the Automatic Transport Matters

Mounting slides manually can lead to uneven framing, fingerprints, or dust. The PAXIMAT Automount’s friction roller adjusts to film thickness automatically, so you get consistent positioning across different film stocks without having to adjust tension by hand. This is especially useful when mounting a large batch of slides from a single shoot.

Compatibility and Limitations

The device works only with PAXIMOUNT CS frames or other C.A.M.-system frames. It does not support standard cardboard or plastic frames without the C.A.M. notch. If you have a mix of frame types, you will need to sort them beforehand or switch to a manual method for non-compatible frames.

Step-by-Step Slide Mounting

  1. Prepare the Film Strip: Cut your developed film into strips of 4–6 frames. Trim the leader so it has a straight, clean edge to feed into the guide slots. A ragged edge can cause the roller to slip or the strip to skew inside the device.
  2. Insert the Strip into the Guide Slots: Hold the film strip by the edges (avoid touching the emulsion) and slide the trimmed end into the guide slots on the front of the PAXIMAT Automount. Push gently until the friction roller catches the film. If the roller does not catch, lift the strip slightly and re-insert; forcing it can bend the film.
  3. Advance to the First Frame: Turn the advance knob clockwise to move the film forward. The roller will grip the film and pull it through evenly. Stop when the first image is centered in the mounting window. Do not reverse the knob while the film is under tension—this can create slack and cause misalignment.
  4. Place the Frame and Mount: Open a PAXIMOUNT CS frame and position it over the exposed slide. Press the frame closed firmly until it clicks. The C.A.M. system locks the slide in place without adhesive. Check that the slide lies flat inside the frame before closing; a curled slide may pop out later.
  5. Advance to the Next Frame and Repeat: Turn the advance knob to move the next frame into position. Continue mounting until the strip is complete. For the last frame, you may need to guide the tail end manually to keep it from slipping out. When the strip is nearly done, advance slowly—the roller has less grip near the end and may skip.

Product Facts

  • BRAUN PAXIMAT Automount DIA-Rahmungsgerät: The film strip is inserted into guide slots and transported by a spring-loaded friction roller that automatically adjusts to film thickness. This means you can mount slides from different film types—like Kodachrome or Ektachrome—without manually changing the pressure, saving time and reducing the risk of scratches.
